I’m a big fan of Rice Krispie Treats and other cereal bars. I’ve made a few for this blog before:
What I don’t do as often is make them fancy. For me, cereal and marshmallow is good enough. I don’t need to concern myself with decorations.

But, a holiday is right around the corner, and I know a lot of people like to make treats for parties, for kids, for family gatherings, and so on. So, I figured, why not try making some Rice Krispie Treats that are a little spookier than normal?

All you need for this is the normal ingredients for Rice Krispie Treats, along with some white chocolate candy melts, some food coloring, and some sprinkles.
- Ghirardeli Candy Melts (Affiliate link): I like candy melts more than just standard white chocolate because it hardens up nicely and doesn’t get all melty like chocolate does if you don’t temper it. Plus, they have a slightly marshmallowy flavor that goes well with the Treats.
- Candy Eyes (Affiliate link): I like having multiple sizes, and you can use these for all kinds of fun decorations. They also make bloody eye versions for an even more ghoulish decoration, but I kept mine tame.

For food coloring, I like gel colors that you don’t need to worry about mixing to the right concentration. You can find those anywhere though, so feel free to use whatever you like to work with.

You can also shortcut this recipe by buying Rice Krispie Treats pre-made for you if you prefer. I like making my own so it’s not a big deal, but there’s no reason you have to, they really don’t taste much different.

Additional suggestions:
- Try theming your decorations after horror movie monsters. Use different kinds of sprinkles to simulate unique features like hair, a witch’s warts, or scars.
- Use a cookie cutter to make your monsters into unique shapes instead of just rectangle spookums.
- Insert a popsicle stick to make the treats a little easier to munch!

- Melt the butter over low heat in a sauce pan.4 Tbsp Butter
- Add the marshmallows to the butter and stir constantly until they melt into goo.5½ Cups Marshmallows
- Add the cereal and stir until it's all well-mixed. Add this to the baking dish and press it flat to form your bars, and set these aside to set for at least 20 minutes.6 Cups Rice Krispies
- Divide your candy melts into microwave-safe bowls, one for each color you want to use for your decorating.10 Oz. White Chocolate Candy Melts
- Microwave the bowl you want to use for about 30 seconds to start melting the wafers. Microwave for 10 seconds at a time after until they're fully melted.
- Stir in food coloring to make the color you want. How much you use depends a lot on how much chocolate you're using and what kind of food coloring you're using.Food Coloring
- Cut your Rice Krispie Treats into bars and dip them in your chosen color. While the chocolate is still warm and melty, use a small spatula to spread chocolate over the front and sides (not the bottom, otherwise it will stick to whatever you set it down on later!) and decorate with sprinkles so they stick when the candy solidifies.Sprinkles, Candy Eyeballs
- Repeat the last two steps for whatever colors and decorations you want to use.
